Group Project #1

Ethical Break Down

Due June 27th by 8:30 A.M.

While some ethical issues are easily solved, for many there are no clearly right or wrong answers.  The ethical answers that managers choose often depend on the ethical intensity of the decision and the ethical principles used to solve the problem.

  1. Scan recent (less than 6 months) business headlines to identify an organizational level ethical dilemma similar to the ones mentioned in class (Disney & IBM). Sources should come from credible news reporting agencies (e.g. – CNN, Business Week, and Tuscaloosa News). Be sure to identify a dilemma, defined as a situation requiring a choice between equally undesirable alternatives, and not an ethical violation.  It is required that you provide the instructor with a copy of or link to the article for prior approval.

  1. Provide a thorough description of the ethical dilemma. You may need to include information pertaining to the organization’s ethical dilemma that you acquired from additional sources. Be sure to cite all your sources.

  1. Provide a concise, yet thorough, analysis of the ethical intensity of the decision. Be sure to address the magnitude of the consequences, social consensus, probability of effect, temporal immediacy, proximity of effect, and concentration of effect.

  1. Provide a concise, yet thorough, analysis of how the ethical dilemma might be handled using each principle of ethical decision-making. Be sure to address the principles of long-term self-interest, personal virtue, religious injunctions, government requirements, utilitarian benefits, individual rights, and distributive justice.

  1. Conclude with your group’s decision pertaining to how the organization should handle the ethical dilemma. There does not have to be agreement within your group as to what decision you feel should be made. However, base your decision(s) on the earlier discussion pertaining to the ethical intensity and overriding principle(s) employed.

“Group” means two to three persons working together, pooling their knowledge and judgments, to reach one or more conclusions.

All members of the group will share the same project grade. If you are unable to solve group related problems (e.g. – no participation, conflict, etc.), please bring them to my attention as soon as possible.

While I do not want to assign a minimum number of pages, I believe it would be difficult to address the tasks with any fewer than four doubled-spaces pages.
