February 16, 2010 -- Noel Carden, FSA, Vice President: Actuarial, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama will speak on "Healthcare Management & Financing: Cross Currents and Crystal Balls" at the Alabama Insurance Society Meeting. The meeting kicks off with an informal supper at 6 p.m. in Bidgood 340. AIS members, prospective members, alumnae and instructors are welcome to attend.

Healthcare management and financing in the United States has been a political hot potato for more than twenty five years.  Health care is estimated to have cost $2.5 trillion in 2009 and account for 16.9 percent of GDP.  If present trends continue, estimated national health care expenditures will total $4.3 trillion in 2017, or 19.5 percent of GDP.  These figures contrast with Germany, France, and Switzerland, where healthcare expenditures fall within the range of 10.1 percent to 13.0 percent of GDP.  In Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, and Sweden the range is 8.1 – 10 percent.  Some observers contend that the United States must make substantial changes in the way healthcare is managed and financed or it will bankrupt the country.  Yet, every effort to make substantial changes has met with resistance and been unable to pass the political barrier—the key hurdle in a democracy.  Our speaker will explain some of the key issues in healthcare management and financing and lay the groundwork for more effective civil discourse on this vital topic.
