Sloan Y. Bashinsky, Sr.

Inducted: 1993

The career of Sloan Y. Bashinsky, Sr. is indicative of what a person with business acumen can accomplish. A Troy, Alabama native, Bashinsky attended Princeton University before leaving in 1940 to serve in the United States Air Force. In 1946, he went to Birmingham as a route salesman for Golden Flake Snack Foods, Inc. Within ten years, he had become president, a position he held until 1972. He resumed the presidency from 1984 to 1985. In 1972, he became the chairman of the board. Between 1976 and 1991, he also served as chief executive officer. Bashinsky has also served as chairman of the board and major stockholder of Golden Flake Enterprises, Inc., a holding company which owns all outstanding shares of Golden Flake Snack Foods, Inc.; Steel City Bolt and Screw, Inc.; and Nall Associates, Inc. He is also director of Steel City Bolt and Screw, Inc. and Nall and Associates, Inc. Bashinsky is active in the philanthropic community serving on the board of directors of the Eye Foundation Hospital and St. Vincent's Foundation; supporting organizations such as the Crippled Children’s Clinic and Foundation, Children’s Hospital, Big Oak Ranch and United Way; and contributing to higher education through service on the Samford University board of trustees. In 1992, Bashinsky made a $3 million gift to the University of Alabama which was used to construct a new computer center, which is named in his honor, for the College of Commerce and Business Administration. Bashinsky and his wife, former Joann Fulghum, are members of Mountain Brook Baptist Church.
